The Fort Knox-Bernheim Wildlife Corridor project will protect forest and farm land around Fort Knox, a 109,000 acre US Army post south of Louisville, Kentucky. KNLT will work to connect the tracts around Fort Knox with Bernheim, a 14,000-acre arboretum and nature preserve located in Clermont, Kentucky. Large natural areas, such as those that occur in and around Fort Knox and Bernheim are crucial to the survival of many native plants and animals. Core areas such as these need to have connecting corridors for the movement of wildlife. This is important for maintaining healthy populations and is especially important with the advent of climate change and the need for plants and animals to move and adapt.

The project grew out of a partnership between KNLT, the Lincoln Trail Area Development District, the Department of Defense, and Bernheim Forest. KNLT has agreed to help negotiate and hold conservation easements with land owners within the one mile border around Fort Knox. KNLT is also working with Bernheim to explore avenues of connectivity between the Fort and Bernheim. A series of forested knobs runs alongside the interstate on both sides, and we hope to have wildlife over or under passes built to provide links between Fort Knox and the greater Bernheim area.
