Pine Mountain Legacy Project
Through the Pine Mountain Legacy Project, KNLT is working to connect existing protected areas on Pine Mountain to form a contiguous forest block and migratory corridor from Virginia to Tennessee, a distance of nearly 110 miles. Large forest blocks are extremely important for the survival of many different plants and animals as well as to the health of the forest itself. KNLT partners with the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission to identify those areas most in need of protection, negotiate the purchase of land with willing sellers, and implement a stewardship plan. Areas of critical ecological importance receive the state's highest form of protection by being dedicated as a Kentucky State Nature Preserve.

Pine Mountain Legacy Project Goals:
Engage a broad cross-section of landowners in conversation about the future of Pine Mountain and provide landowners with information about stewardship and restoration;
Protect and steward all known high value and highly sensitive ecological areas, including necessary buffer land;
Create a continuous ecological corridor of protected and sustainably managed land from north to south; and,
Encourage and support locally owned, environmentally compatible economic enterprises.
